Home Minister Seeks Halt to ‘Paanch Pandav’ Screening Amid Controversy

The Home Minister has asked the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology to halt the screening of the Nepali film ‘Paanch Pandav’, which has been at the centre of controversy over its portrayal of religious figures.

The move follows widespread criticism on social media and objections from religious organisations over certain scenes in the film.

According to an official at the Communications Ministry, the Home Minister has verbally instructed the ministry to stop the film’s screening for the time being.

The official said that formal procedures regarding the matter would begin the following day. However, actor Hari Bansha Acharya said that the film team had not yet received any official communication from the ministry.

The controversy centres on scenes in which Draupadi, a character from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, is portrayed dancing in a bar. Various Hindu organisations have objected to the depiction of the Pandavas and Draupadi, submitting memorandums to the Communications Ministry and demanding that the film’s release be stopped.

Earlier, director Basanta Niraula had said that the film was not a religious narrative but used characters from the Mahabharata symbolically to tell a story about contemporary Nepali society.

Starring Hari Bansha Acharya, Aryan Sigdel, Jitu Nepal and others, ‘Paanch Pandav’ was scheduled for nationwide release on Kartik 20.
